![]() The social experience of work matters, particularly when people are getting started. The military does not do basic training by remote, and there’s a reason for that: Building a healthy culture requires real face time. Let the level of collaboration drive the level of coordination Cross-silo teams work best with an in-person dimension. Not coincidentally, they also saw higher employee satisfaction. They delegated more, did more leadership training, focused more on outcomes. McKinsey research has found that the most resilient companies-those that actually improved their performance in the first year of the pandemic-relied more on small, cross-functional teams with real authority to make decisions. There is also a case for organizational redesign. Consider new designs and technologies, such as sensors and moveable walls, that promote flexibility and collaboration. Traditional offices are full of heads-down workspaces, such as desks and cubicles. The design of office space is one factor. Creating a sense of belonging and feeling valued holds the key to strengthening ties with employees, so they want to grow within the company-not outside it. People with positive employee experiences have 16 times the engagement level of those with negative ones, and they are eight times more likely to want to stay. This is not about providing organic snacks and foosball tables it’s about creating employee experiences that are purposeful and authentic. Make the office a place people want to come toīy attracting people to come back regularly, a natural momentum can build, without imposing an arbitrary day count. The implication is that without flexibility, not only will it be difficult to recruit and retain talent, but diversity and inclusion efforts are doomed. ![]() Moreover, women play an outsized role in providing the informal social bonding that keeps organizations together. Parents, particularly non-white ones, feel this most acutely, and because parents make up a big share of crucial middle- and upper-management roles, losing them can cripple a company’s future. About half of employees who left their jobs said they had done so because they did not have good work-life balance. In a 2021 survey, almost 30% of respondents said they would consider quitting if made to return to fulltime on-site work. While there may be executives who miss seeing a sea of cubicles, they are going to have to get over it: that is not what work is about anymore, if it ever was. With those principles in mind, here is how businesses can use the return to work to create a new and better way of operating that works for both companies and people. And finally, employers have the right, and responsibility, to set expectations. A third is that letting people do exactly what they want, when they want, rarely works. If they don’t like the conditions of employment, they will bristle, and given that the stigma of leaving a job no longer exists, many will just quit. Another is that the power dynamic, particularly for higher-skilled jobs, has shifted in favor of employees. One is that COVID-19 is part of the future, and so are the many workplace changes that have taken root, such as remote and hybrid working. But there are some principles that will apply widely. Getting it right depends on the company, industry, geography, and workforce. There is no single answer to what the norms should be for the next normal. More than four in 10 went to a different industry. Moreover, according to that same January McKinsey survey, there is no evidence of a “boomerang effect”-that is, people returning to their previous jobs only 20% do. In the most recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of Americans quitting their jobs remains near record levels. According to survey by McKinsey in January, among those who had left a job without having another one, those who came back to the workforce rated flexibility as the single most important reason. If businesses cannot keep their talent happy, many of them will simply leave, and one of the most important factors in coming and going is flexibility. Those are all good points, but there’s a problem with this scenario: it won’t work. ![]() Finally, there is the virtue of familiarity this is the way they are used to managing. In addition, it is difficult-maybe impossible-to build a cohesive corporate culture remotely. Business is ever more collaborative, they reason, and while teleconferencing has proved useful, it is not nearly as good as having everyone in the same room. In mid-2021, McKinsey found that a majority of employers envisioned people coming into the office four or five days a week. As a result, many leaders have been tempted to keep it simple. ![]() These grand estates, called patroonships, were granted to stockholders who promised to have fifty adults living on the estate within four years. ![]() The New Netherland colony was highly aristocratic, with large feudal estates along the Hudson River. The Dutch West India Company was also influential, but operated primarily in the Caribbean, where it was more interested in raiding than trading. He filed a claim to all of this land for the Dutch. Hudson sailed along the upper coast of North America, and in 1609 he encountered Delaware Bay and the river named for him, the Hudson River. Seeking greater riches and a passageway around America to China, the Dutch East India Company hired Henry Hudson, an English explorer. The Dutch East India Company established a trading empire that was profitable for over three hundred years. Like the English, the Dutch developed colonies by authorizing joint-stock companies to go forth and establish trading outposts and commerce. With this newfound power, the Dutch became a leading colonial presence, especially in the East Indies. The Netherlands evolved into a major commercial and naval power and challenged its former benefactor, England, on several occasions during the seventeenth century. In the late sixteenth century, with the help of Protestant England, the people of the Netherlands won their independence from Spain. The Dutch were some of the first to settle in this area. The primary motive for establishing the middle, or mid-Atlantic colonies of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware was to develop profitable trading centers. ![]() Report the release version and repository revision level. I also re-balanced the pots so the movable contact was at its electrical center. The now functional pot resulted in the proper bias on the tubes, about -22 to -23 volts which was correct for the applied levels of plate and screen voltages according to my tube manual. I made sure the other pot which was intact was also cleaned. Cleaning the inside and applying some more DeOxit directly saved the pot. The sliding contacts were being interfered with by a greasy substance that I assume was hardened lubricant. I pulled the offending pot and opened it. These are nominally 100K ohm linear pots. While measuring fine end to end, the tap was not making proper contact. The problem turned out to be the balancing pot on the channel I was testing. However, I had new respect for this "weak" pair of tubes. Not the best thing for 7591A tubes which, at the voltages in this set, are running near their margin. I quickly isolated the cause, zero grid bias. Time to check under the hood (with the tuner-amp on its back). It was working, but the ammeter was slowly inching towards about 1.8 amps, too much power draw with only one channel active! I shut off power. After the 5AR4 pair kicked in, I heard the pleasing sound of FM off-station rush noise. Then, watching the AC ammeter closely, I slowly powered the set. ![]() I connected an antenna clip lead and a test speaker to the one channel and set the controls to FM stereo. I decided to just test one channel of the amp section at a time, using the weaker tube pair. On checking the output tubes and rectifiers with my stingy TV-7 military tube tester, I found one pair of 7591A tubes to be weak, but the other pair and the rectifiers easily passed the test. I had checked resistance on those pots and had not found a problem. I did not immediately check the balance pots for the grid bias adjustments on the output tubes, a mistake on my part. However, the voltage from the bias supply with the silicon rectifier in place was spot-on. I replaced the little selenium bridge with a silicon bridge expecting to have to reduce its output to match the 48 volts. It wasn't producing even half that which was obvious because the four 12AX7 tubes did not show a proper filament glow. That means the supply must deliver about 48 volts output after the filter capacitors and resistors. The manual and schematic do not show the voltage output from that bias rectifier, but it supplies the DC filament voltage for four 12AX7 series-connected preamp tubes. The bias supply in the Scott 340, like similar sets, is by way of a small full wave selenium bridge rectifier. Proper negative grid bias voltage is vital in such sets. The cathodes for all the 7591A output tubes are directly grounded. That is an important step in this set and many other high power audio tube sets using a fixed bias supply as opposed to cathode bias. ![]() I gave it a thorough cleaning with waterless hand cleaner and old toothbrushes and rags.Īfter safety checks such as checking the fuse for proper size and for any line to chassis leakage which was not a problem in this set, I often do an initial power-up without the high voltage rectifier tubes to check the AC voltages from the power transformer and proper current draw for just the filaments. You can also use ADP to determine which guys may drop in the draft but have a high-value rating. You want to be sure to target the guys before the drop-off takes place. Step 4 - (ties right into step 3) - Go down the sheet and identify where the value drop-off exists. People using generic rankings found online will suffer because they don't have a tool, like you do now, to identify value. However, because of your league's scoring system and ADP, the next value will be higher than the current value. The number is calculated with the same aforementioned formula (plus ADP) however, you can use it to identify the drop-off between the player value you're looking at now and the next available player in that position. "Next Value" is tricky because it's based on the estimated average draft position (ADP). "Value" is the number of projected points a player is expected to produce (plus or minus), versus the league average based on your point system and the number of player slots for said position. Notice the columns at the top of the draft worksheet named "Value" and "NP-Value". Let's now discuss leveraging value and determining a position's scarcity during the draft. ![]() This drop-off is known as position scarcity. It helps you identify drop-offs in projected production for each position. Step 3 - Mid to Late Round (understanding value and how to quickly identify it during a live draft) - Our value system is based on your league settings and is averaged based on the number of slots in your Fantasy league for each position. You'll also use this information throughout the draft process measured against a player's value which we discuss next. Keep this in mind because it will help you make decisions on how long you can hold off before drafting in certain situations. Step 2 - Preparation is the key to success - Now I want you to highlight or mark (consistency is key here) all the sleepers and late-round options you would like to target. ![]() Use the Export to Excel above the worksheet. If Davante Adams is projected for 231.6 half-PPR points and the average of the top 36 wide receivers is 191.5, this gives Adams a value of 40, which means he is projected to score 40 more points than your league's top 36 WRs average. The research team then relayed their audio measurements to the CymaScope lab in the UK. McDonough submerged himself in front of the dolphin, Amaya, who scanned him with her biosonar. The diver, Jim McDonough, swam without breathing gear to make certain that air bubbles didn’t impact the final image. The team tested a variety of objects, including a flower pot and cube, before finally testing a human. According to scientific surveys, dolphins create 3D images in their brain, a sort of ultrasound of even more. The technique seems similar to looking at a shadow cast on a wall to get a sense of the person casting it. Choose from our handpicked collection of beautiful, high-quality dolphin images and pictures. Their brain is as complicated as the human one. Because any object in the water attenuates the original signal, measuring how these signals differ can give us the idea of a shape of an object. First, it used high-test audio equipment to capture the sonic vibrations produced by Amaya (the dolphin) as she swept her biosonar across various objects. The research team created the image below in two steps. If you’ve ever stood near a building or large surface and heard the way it affected your voice, or heard an actual echo chamber in action, you’ve experienced a crude example of what dolphins can perform biologically at much higher resolution. These objects generate a return signal that the dolphin receives and interprets. As the click passes through the water, it encounters objects. Dolphin biosonar works by releasing a series of high-frequency “clicks” from an organ in their skulls known as a melon. Researchers at are claiming to have bridged that gap between humans and dolphins for the very first time. The more worldly among us will see a naked couple engaged in an erotic embrace but children and other innocent. We’ve known for decades that dolphins could use echolocation to avoid objects and hunt for food, but knowing that a capability exists is a far cry from understanding how the animal perceives its own capability. Thanks to this optical illusion doing the rounds, there’s an easy way to tell. This is particularly true with aquatic species, which have adapted to life in an entirely different environment than our own. One of the most profound barriers between humans and other species of life on Earth is understanding how they perceive the world. Other anatomists noted that the teeth of mammoths and elephants differed from those of the "incognitum", which possessed rows of large conical cusps, indicating that they were dealing with a distinct species. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach assigned the scientific name Mammut to the American "incognitum" remains in 1799, under the assumption that they belonged to mammoths. People started referring to the "incognitum" as a "mammoth", like the ones that were being dug out in Siberia – in 1796 the French anatomist Georges Cuvier proposed the radical idea that mammoths were not simply elephant bones that had been somehow transported north, but a species which no longer existed. There soon followed discoveries of complete bones and tusks in Ohio. Similar teeth were found in South Carolina, and some of the African slaves there supposedly recognized them as being similar to the teeth of African elephants. They carried them to the Mississippi River, from where they were transported to the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. In 1739 French soldiers at present-day Big Bone Lick State Park, Kentucky, found the first bones to be collected and studied scientifically. The mystery animal became known as the "incognitum".
